January 12th, 2012: The New Guy (2002)
Years ago when I had finally watched enough movies to really justifiably name any movie as my “favorite”, The New Guy stood tall. I first watched in my neighbor’s house and immediately bought it once I had a DVD player, making it one of my first DVD’s. It was funny and quirky, with enough heart that I could get behind it. However, time passed and I put that DVD to the side for new comedies that never quite satisfied me in the same way. Now, it’s been a solid five years since I’ve last seen this movie, so I was worried it wouldn’t hold up. It has.
Best Part: I’ve always been partial to Suburban Funks performance of “Play That Funky Music White Boy”. It’s one of my favorite songs and they do a fantastic rendition. Oh yea, and Pete, the cool black kid who has some of the funniest lines in the movie. He literally makes me laugh out loud every time, whether it be from his lines themselves or the things that happen to him when he doesn’t keep his mouth shut. I don’t know why his star didn’t rise.
Worst Part: I never really liked how the whole school turns on Dizzy (DJ Qualls) at the end of the movie. I always imagine that the next day they were like “Whatever” and treated him nicely again. They developed too much as a community to think otherwise.
Side Note: My high school guidance counselor is the brother of Glen (Parry Shen). That was one of the coolest things in the world for me when I found out.
Overall: 9 out of 10. This is still one of my favorite movies.
